HALLWAY
We enter the hallway with its elegant pilastered archways that lead the eye through to the secondary stairs at the rear.
The painted chest of drawers on the right, in Chinoiserie style, dates from about 1790 and supports an ebonised bracket clock by Edward East.
On the walls is a collection of barometers: the earliest, by Daniel Quare, dates from around 1690.
The hallway stretches through the house from the original front doorway to the rear lobby, where a staircase leads to guest bedrooms on the top floor.
John Carr used this same treatment of arches and pilasters with Acanthus-leaf capitals to equally good effect in Castlegate House (1762-3), for which he was also the architect and which is situated just across the street from Fairfax House.
The hallway is shown here decorated for Christmas in Georgian style, with simple pendants and garlands of evergreens, plus orange trees brought in from the conservatory.
