Carmichael was born in Newcastle where he flourished as a successful marine painter.
In about 1845 he moved to London and during the Russian war, joined one of the fleets sailing to the Baltic. His drawings were published as engravings in the 'Illustrated London News'.
His most noticeable production, however, was the series 'English Coastal Views from the Mouth of the Thames to the Firth of the Forth.'
