Stuccowork - 'Friendship'

The Italian artist, Cesare Ripa, devised a whole series of metaphors, emblems and representations, which designers could use to convey complex messages.

Each part of the image for 'friendship' has a specific meaning, the elm tree surrounded by a vine, for example, signifies that a friendship formed in prosperity always lasts and that friendship must come first, above love.

There are mottos in the tree, on a ribbon in her hand and on the helm of her dress which testify that true friendship survives, whether the person be present or absent, in winter or summer, or in life or death.
