Part of the Noel Terry Collection

Height: 2.15m; Width: 1.04m. Depth: 62cm NT1984.097

An important early eighteenth century bureau cabinet, the doors opening to reveal an elaborate fitted interior having a series of shaped drawers, shelves, secret compartments, candlestick slides and pigeonholes. The Corinthian columns, surmounted by gilt brass classical figures, probably depicting Mars and Venus, contain secret compartments which are only revealed when sprung oak catches are released. A further 9 hidden drawers are distributed about the piece.

The cabinet is constructed in three sections, with a sloping front in the centre which functions as a writing desk. Set within this is a hinged baize-covered panel which rises up to give support for books and pamphlets.

Discovered behind one of the secret drawers was an English £1 banknote drawn on the Cheltenham & Gloucester Bank, signed by the manager and dated for 1823.
