Balusters
The design of the ironwork, by Leeds ironsmith Maurice Tobin, with its figure of eight pattern and interlacing scrollwork is similar to that seen at Aske Hall near Richmond, Yorks.
Balusters
The dark blue base-colour with gilded highlights was a popular treatment for ironwork at this time. The alternative would be a dark green, but would depend on the choice of wall colour.
On the top landing, outside the father’s bedroom, are three balusters which incorporate pairs of rosebuds within the design. This is thought to be a secret message and alludes to the father’s support for the outlawed Jacobite cause. The closed rose bud is meant to represent the unfulfilled potential of the Stuart 'Pretender'.
