Stucco Ceiling
Lord Fairfax will have worked closely with the stuccoist, Giuseppe Cortese, to create this complex medley of message and meaning.
Stucco Ceiling
At the centre is a symbol of military power, the figure of ‘Architecture Militaire’ and in the surrounding coving are weapons, both ancient and modern. Most observers in the 18thC would understand that the military is the arm of the State and consider, therefore, that this display is meant as "support for King and Country"
Also of note are the busts on the brackets, which flank this ceiling, dedicated to Shakespeare and Newton, which celebrate these great ‘worthies’ of the Arts and Sciences.
