Explore Fairfax: Hallway
We enter the hallway with elegant arched pilasters that lead the eye through to the secondary stairs.
The painted chest of drawers on the right, in Chinoiserie style, dates from about 1790 and supports an ebonised bracket clock by Edward East.
On the walls is a collection of barometers, the earliest, by Daniel Quare, dates from around 1690.
At the end of the hallway are rear stairs which lead to the guest bedrooms on the top floor.
Carr used this same treatment of the pilasters and Acanthus capitals on the arches to good effect in Castlegate House, across the street.
The hallway is shown decorated for Christmas with simple pendants and garlands of evergreens, plus orange trees brought in from the conservatory.
