Stucco medallion - 'Roma'
Between the doors on the ground floor and set high is this draped stucco medallion of Roma after a design in Phillipe Maffei, Gemme Antiche Figurate, 1707.
Stucco medallion - 'Roma'
She sits on the ‘spoils of the vanquished foe’ and holds a figure of ‘Victory’ in one hand. At her feet, some sheep are separated from a goat, in quasi-religious manner and hanging as a pendant are three varieties of rose, the white, the red and damask rose, all imbued with profound symbolic meaning for Roman Catholics.
