Square Piano
Square piano: detail
This type of piano, with only 4 ˝ octaves, was ideal for home entertainment in the saloon of a country house.
Haxby was a highly talented Songman at York Minster and prolific instrument maker. His square pianos were owned by renowned composers like William Mason and Thomas Arne and he continually experimented with ways to improve the instrument. Our model incorporates a novel ‘swell’ mechanism which uses a series of levers and pushers linked to a pedal, to allow the sound to increase.
