Explore Fairfax: Viscount's Bedroom
The second bed-chamber on the first floor is the Viscount's Bedroom. Hung with a daisy pattern paper (from the Temple Newsam Collection) and displaying a four poster bed designed by Francis Johnson.
Mahogany secretaire c.1760 and walnut chair (1 of 4) c.1725.
By the fireplace is a Secretaire and chair. The mahogany Secretaire, c.1760, by William Vile and a walnut Chair,c.1725, by Giles Grendey are exemplars of their age.
A number of religious paintings adorn the walls, and include the Seven Acts of Mercy after Franc Francken c.1630.
The English ceramics include a large Rockingham Mug with a picture of a London to York covered wagon. On the mantle shelf is a Chamberlains Worcester Bough Pot featuring a view of York Castle, as seen from the river. Flanking this is a Reliquary of Saint Ignatius of Loyala and its companion featuring the Virgin Mary.
During the days of the cinema company this room was used as the ladies and gents toilets.
Restoration involved re-instating some of the carved dado and skirting board and fitting a replacement fireplace rescued from Methley Hall.
The bed, designed by Francis Johnson, was made in Dick Reid’s studio and uses French Chintz hangings. The shaped tester was painted by York decorators Bellerbys.
On the mantle shelf are reliquaries of silk and set in a gilt Rococo frame, woven with silver and gold thread and dedicated to St. Ignatius of Loyala and the Virgin Mary.
