Seven Acts of Mercy
The foremost of the three virtues is Charity, a concept which European artists expressed through the representation of the 'Acts of Mercy'.
Seven Acts of Mercy
The disciple, Mathew,(25:35-37) defined charity as being manifested in six acts, these being: 1.feeding the hungry,2.giving drink to the thirsty, 3. welcoming strangers,4.clothing the naked,5.tending the sick and 6.visiting strangers.
The Roman Catholic religion, however, has a seventh, the burying of the dead, and all these 7 acts of charity are illustrated in our painting, probably by Dutch artist, Franc Francken,c.1590.
