Reliquary of Saint Ignatius of Loyala
A reliquary, gilt pine and silk, eighteenth century.
Reliquary of St. Francis of Loyala
Height: 36cm Width: 22cm. CT1985.308(1of 2)
Contained within an elaborate gilded rococo frame is an image of St. Ignatius of Loyola, born in 1491 in Azpeitia in the Basque province of Guipuzcoa in northern Spain, who, after living a debauched life as a young man turned to priesthood.
The miniature shows him dressed in the black habit of the Society of Jesus, an order he founded in the 1530s. He holds a panel or tablet depicting the Virgin Mary dressed in her traditional blue habit and on his sleeve is a gilded badge showing the letters IHS, the monogram of his Society.
Surrounding the painting are scrolled panels, plumes and flowers all delicately worked in gold and light blue silk thread.
Traces of wax at the back of the frame suggest that reliquaries were attached in order to give the piece more meaning. This might have been a container holding a piece of cloth or an object associated with Christ in some way.
A companion to this frame features a miniature of the Virgin Mary surrounded by a more elaborate design of scrolls and trellis patterns, all worked in silver, gold and silk threads. This too has traces of wax at the back and an old label with the inventory No. 32.
