A rare privilege to visit a private house not normally open to the public. Aldby Park at Buttercrambe is a delightful, early Georgian gem built in 1724 on an ancient site that was once the moated Saxon palace of King Edwin and Queen Ethelburga. Surrounded by its own enclosed park and garden, the mansion sits looking down on the River Derwent. Sara Winn-Darley will show us around her ancestral home which houses a life-size portrait of the Darley Arabian, one of three foundation stallions from which all English thoroughbreds throughout the world are derived.

Friends’ own transport required to meet at Aldby Park, which lies east of York off the A166. Travelling from York, turn left for Buttercrambe about half a mile before Stamford Bridge. There is easy parking in front of the house.
