We begin at Cowlam church, hidden in the farmyard where the rebuilt Norman church is set. It is a place of great archaeological interest, being the site of a lost village and a German prisoner of war camp. Mostly rebuilt in the nineteenth century, it retains a spectacularly carved Norman font and the faint traces of a medieval wall painting. We then drive to Helperthorpe church, one of the famous group of Sykes churches. On to Weaverthorpe church, which stands sentinel over the valley from the high ground. Built by the father of St William of York, it has a Norman font and exceptionally fine nineteenth century furnishings inside. Finally we’ll go on to the tiny and charming Butterwick church. It has a Norman drum font and fourteenth century effigy of a knight. Restored by Fowler Jones, much of the original remains.

We will start at Cowlam farmyard, more details will be circulated nearer the time.
