A house steeped in history, Newburgh on the edge of the Howardian hills, nestled near the village of Coxwold was founded in 1145 as an Augustinian Priory. Following the dissolution of the monasteries, it became home to the Bellasis family whose connections and history with the Fairfaxes were closely entwined. The Georgians inevitably laid their mark on the priory in the first half of the eighteenth century. Yet with the arrival of the Wombwell family in 1802, in whjose care it remains today, very little has changed, despite it being in the words of the family ‘a hotbed of political shenanigans’. Stephen Wombwell welcomes this Friends visit to experience the unique character and charm of his family home and the beautiful idyllic gardens in which it is set.

Friends own transport required to Newburgh Priory, which lies about 20 miles north of York near the village of Coxwold. Parking is available in the Priory’s car park.
