Summer Visit & Garden Drinks Party

The Friends of Fairfax House have received an exclusive invitation to Wykeham Abbey, near Scarborough, an exceptionally interesting house that is seldom open to the public. This will be the Friends special Summer Event for 2016 and include a garden drinks party.

The programme for this special afternoon will start with Scampston Hall Gardens (beautifully restored in recent years by the renowned Dutch Plantsman, Piet Oudolf) near Malton which we will visit en route. Alongside more traditional areas, the walled garden is in a delightful contemporary style that captures the imagination. Lunch or snacks can be obtained in the Garden Restaurant (not included in the cost), or you can bring a picnic if you prefer.

After lunch we will move on to Wykeham Abbey House and garden at the invitation of Lady Diana Downe. On the site of a Cistercian nunnery, the earliest part of the present house is 18th century, but it was largely rebuilt in 1904. We will be given a private tour of the house after which we can enjoy a stroll through the attractive 18th century walled garden which is now used as a plant nursery. Early evening drinks will be served on the garden terrace (or in the house if wet) before our departure. We will hold our usual ‘garden party’ raffle and try to make this the best fund-raising event of the year.

Coach departs from Leeman Road Memorial Gardens at 12.00 noon, returning to York at about 7.00pm. There will be a pick-up point at Monks Cross at c.12.20.

Cost include entry fees, refreshments at Wykeham, coach hire and donation to the driver. (Please note if you choose to travel by car the cost will remain the same.)
