We will be starting our visit at St John the Baptist church, Healaugh, a Norman church begun about 1150 and with a very fine and amply decorated south doorway.  We then move on about five minutes drive to All Saints church in Wighill, a short distance to the west. This has a Norman nave and another notable south doorway, well preserved and very well decorated. Inside are interesting fittings and monuments.

Our final stop is at St Helen’s church in Bilton in Ainstry, about seven miles drive north via the B1224. This a 12th century church restored from 1869 by that prolific Victorian architect, Sir George Gilbert Scott. Here we will enjoy refreshments before returning home. The plan is to spend about 45 minutes at each church to allow reasonable time to explore each building’s special features.

The start point at Healaugh church is easiest reached from York from the A64/A1237 junction near to Askham Bryan. Follow Askham Bryan from the roundabout, then turn left after about half a mile and then straight on to Healaugh. Roadside parking is available at all three places and guidance will be given from Healaugh.
