Sandbeck Park is one of the most dramatic creations of the distinguished English architect, James Paine.
It is just 10 years since we were last treated to a privileged visit to this important house which is not normally open to the public. Built for the 4th Lord Scarbrough in the mid-18th century, it is quite unlike any other house of this date. The garden front in particular with massive portico and rustic arcade will not easily be forgotten. The climax will probably be the first floor ballroom, displaying one of the most splendid plaster ceilings in the north of England. It is by Joseph Rose, who also worked at Nostell Priory not far away.
