Rokeby Park was designed and built by its owner, Sir Thomas Robinson between 1725 and 1730. As a great admirer of Kent and Burlington, the house displays admirable features of these two architects, but perhaps as importantly, the grounds are laid out in the ‘naturalistic’ manner and may well be the first such example in England of this informal approach to estate planning.
This should be a particularly delightful occasion because we will be given a special guided tour by one of our own members, Robert Latter, who has recently been appointed Administrator for Rokeby Park. Afterwards there will be time to explore the grounds, perhaps enjoying the beautiful walk to the banks of the River Greta. There will be an opportunity to take afternoon tea at a tearoom near by.
