Young People Celebrate Christmas at Fairfax House
Children from 5 schools in York have been invited to sing Christmas songs at Fairfax House
Photocall: There will be a photo opportunity to see pupils from St Olave’s School performing Christmas songs on Friday 7 December at 10.45am in the Saloon Room at Fairfax House.
Schoolchildren from five schools in York will be singing Christmas songs and carols at a series of special Christmas concerts at Fairfax House over the next few weeks.
The young people are from St Paul's, St Olave's, Huntington, Park Grove and Westfield Primary Schools and they have been rehearsing for several weeks to perform in the stunning Georgian surroundings to an invited audience.
Fairfax House Director, Peter Brown, is delighted the young people will the opportunity to be part of the annual schools Christmas celebrations in the House. He commented: “We are looking forward to hearing the young people choirs from each school and understand that the programmes will be a mixture of carols and songs, some of which have been specially written for their Fairfax House concerts.
“This event is now a regular one in the Fairfax House calendar and we will be offer the chance for different schools to take part each year.”
Following the concerts, the school parties will have the chance to look around the House which will be decorated for the ‘Christmas with Jane Austen’ exhibition which is open for the month of December. They will have the chance to find out more about how the authoress would have celebrated Christmas in the 18th century. This information has been extracted from the various letters to and from her sisters and her brother, Edward and show that her Christmas festivities would have been similar to those of the Fairfax family here in York.
