York Residents April Treat!
Free Entry to 3 Historic Houses in York
York Residents will get the chance to visit Fairfax House, Treasurer’s House and The Merchant Adventurers' Hall free of charge as part of a special promotion from Saturday 25th April to Thursday 30th April.

All three historical buildings are closed to the public in January for their annual winter cleaning programme and consequently are not able to open their doors as part of the Residents First Weekend.

All properties wanted to give the public the opportunity to see inside these magnificent buildings and have chosen a week in April to allow local people to look around at their leisure.

Peter Brown, Director at Fairfax House is delighted that York people will have the chance to see round the magnificent 18th century Georgian townhouse. He added: “This year Fairfax House celebrates 25 years since it was open as a House Museum and it’s a very special year for us. Visitors to the House will get the chance to see the ‘Banquet to Dessert’ exhibition displaying sugar novelties and sweetmeats that provided the final part of the meal in the 17th century. Later in the year (13 to 20 September) there will be a special Silver Screen cinema week remembering the House when it was St Georges Cinema and more information about this celebration will follow shortly.”

Left by one Yorkshireman to the nation in 1930, so that others could enjoy and appreciate period interiors, Treasurer’s House has still to be discovered by many living in York. Jane Whitehead, Property Manager said: “It’s not every day that residents get a chance to spend an hour or two exploring some of their local treasurers for free. We really hope people will seize this opportunity as I’m confident they won’t know why they never visited sooner!”

The Merchant Adventurers’ Hall was closed in January and February for a state of the art lighting system to be installed. Lauren Marshall, Hall Manager will be delighted to welcome York Residents into the building. She said: “Visitors can now properly, for the first time really appreciate the beautiful timber frames in all their glory. Now in its 652nd year, the Hall is excited to share its interactive computer exhibition ‘Meet the Merchants!’ celebrating the Hall’s long and impressive history in a fun and modern way.”

All three Houses have current leaflets detailing activities throughout the year and information on their websites (see website addresses below).

To gain entry to Fairfax House, Treasurer’s House and The Merchant Adventurers' Hall during this special period in April, local residents will need to show their York Cards.
