Historic Houses Free for York Residents in May
See inside Fairfax House, the Treasurer’s House and The Merchant Adventurers' Hall between 8 and 13 May 2010
York Residents will get the chance to visit Fairfax House, Treasurer’s House and The Merchant Adventurers' Hall free of charge as part of a special promotion from Saturday 8th to Thursday 13th May 2010.

All three historical buildings are closed to the public in January for their annual winter cleaning programme and consequently are not able to open their doors as part of the Residents First Weekend. All properties wanted to give the public the opportunity to see inside these magnificent buildings and have chosen a week in May to allow local people to look around at their leisure.

Left by one Yorkshireman to the nation in 1930, so that others could enjoy and appreciate period interiors, Treasurer’s House has still to be discovered by many living in York. Jane Whitehead, Property Manager said: “With lots of new improvements throughout the house, garden and tearoom over the winter we can't wait to show off Treasurer's to our local residents to remind them of what a gem they have sitting on their doorstep to enjoy regularly.”

Fairfax House is delighted to give local residents the chance to see round the impressive 18th century Georgian townhouse and the famous Noel Terry collection. Director Hannah Phillip added: “Fairfax House is one of the finest townhouses in England. There is so much to discover about Georgian living and our excellent volunteer guides will be on hand to share their detailed knowledge with York visitors. We also have a varied programme of events happening throughout the year, which we hope local resident will enjoy. Highlights will include the Silver Screen Week (26 Sept – 3 Oct) and focusing on war year films shown between 1939 and 1945;a stunning costume exhibition ‘Dress to Impress’ (18 June – 21 Nov); family events including a Children’s Day (6 Aug) led by Georgian costumed characters and Christmas storytelling (12 & 19 Dec) and a summer lecture series featuring furniture historian Adam Bowett (8 June) talking about English and Professor Mark Hallett, talking about the Art of Sir Joshua Reynolds (5 July).”

The Merchant Adventurers’ Hall is one of York’s Medieval marvels. Set in its own walled gardens bordering the River Foss, the stunning timber framed Hall offers a unique view of York’s history to anyone who comes through its doors. Lauren Marshall, the Hall Manager is hoping that many local residents will take the opportunity to explore the Medieval masterpiece for the first time. She explains: “The Merchant Adventurers’ Hall has been part of York life for over 650 years, so we would love for a new generation of residents to have the chance to see this stunning building for themselves.”

All three Houses have current leaflets detailing activities throughout the year and information on their websites (see website addresses below). To gain entry to Fairfax House, Treasurer’s House and The Merchant Adventurers' Hall during this special period in May, local residents will need to show their York Cards.
