Celebrating National Grandparents Day!
Grandparents and grandchildren are invited to a special tour at Fairfax House to celebration Grandparents Day on Sunday 9 September
Have you ever wondered how the Georgians coped without electricity? How they went to the toilet? Did they use soap? Who did the washing up? How food was presented on the table and what they ate? Now is there is a chance to find out the answers, in a special tour for grandparents and grandchildren which marks national Grandparents Day on Sunday 9 September.

The hour-long tour which starts as 12.30pm, is led by the Director of Fairfax House, Peter Brown and will look at the House from a child’s perspective, giving the opportunity for grandparents and grandchildren to share a special experience and gather some interesting Georgian facts.

Peter Brown elaborated: “Children have so many questions when they visit the House, many of which adults would probably like to know the answers to as well. This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to have a voice and at the same time learn more about the life styles of Georgian families, discover more about how they spend their money and what was important to them.”

The tour will start in the Library where the group will be encouraged to find and read the names of the portraits hidden in the ceiling, they will also get to find out more about how the pendulum works in the clock case and what Georgian children read.

In the dining room there will be explanations as to why the chairs were so wide, an opportunity to find the animal paintings in the fireplace, find out more about Georgian mealtime entertainments and to see where the chamber pot was stored!

Life below stairs is explained whilst visiting the kitchen, where children will find out about the servants duties The yearly wage for a servant was equivalent to what young children get as pocket money today. They will also be told the differences in diets between the servants and the masters and who were the fittest!

There is a lot to explore in the bedrooms and children will find out why the beds were designed to be so high, how the Georgians washed themselves without the use of running tap water, what the ingredients were that made soap bars and why wigs were worn.

The secret drawers in the cabinets in the Drawing Room will be revealed and children will be told more about the games Georgian children would have played in this room whilst growing up.

Finally in The Saloon there will be conversations about the tea caddies, types of tea, sugar and porcelain used to serve tea and the children will be encouraged to look at the music in the ceiling to see what names they can spot.

Following the tour, a well deserved cake and drink will be enjoyed by all. Tickets cost £8.00 for Grandparent & one child and a Grandparent Family Ticket is £12.00, all tickets to include soft drinks and cakes.

There will be an additional Grandparents and Grandchildren’s Tour which will take place on Friday 26 October at 3.30pm during half-term week.
