York Residents May Treat!
York Residents can visit three Historic Houses for free in May
York Residents will get the chance to visit Fairfax House, Treasurer’s House and The Merchant Adventurers' Hall free of charge as part of a special promotion in May.

All three historical buildings are closed to the public in January for their annual winter cleaning programme and consequently are not able to open their doors as part of the Residents First Weekend.

All properties wanted to give the public the opportunity to see inside these magnificent buildings and have chosen a week in May to allow local people to look around at their leisure. They will open their doors to York Residents from Saturday 10th May to Thursday 15th May from 11am to 4.30pm daily.

Peter Brown, Director at Fairfax House is delighted that York people will have the chance to see round the magnificent 18th century Georgian townhouse. He added: “During May there will still be the opportunity for visitors to see the Passion for Buildings exhibition which looks at the Amateur Architect in England 1650 - 1850 exhibition. This exhibition has been curated by the Sir John Soane’s Museum and shows off a number of distinguished buildings designed by Yorkshire gentlemen architects including Lord Burlington, William Worsley and Sir Thomas Robinson. There will also be the chance to see the 300 year Chinese famille verte vase and the remnants of a Chinese shopping list which caused a media stir at the start of the year!”

There are some surprises in store for York Residents at Treasurer’s House. Jane Whitehead, Property Manager commented: “I don’t want to give too much away but the garden, the tearoom and the conservation staff all have some special opportunities for York residents to see just what great places their city holds, just off the beaten track.”

The Merchant Adventurers’ Hall was closed in January for the cleaning and repainting of the Great Hall ceiling. Jill Malusky-Bacon, Hall Manager will be delighted to welcome York Residents into the building. She said: “Visitors can once again appreciate the beautiful timber frames in all their glory. Now in its 651st year, the Hall is excited to share its interactive computer exhibition ‘Meet the Merchants!’ celebrating the Hall’s long and impressive history in a fun and modern way.”

All three Houses have current leaflets detailing activities throughout the year and information on their websites (see website addresses below).

To gain entry to Fairfax House, Treasurer’s House and The Merchant Adventurers' Hall during this special period in May, local residents will need to show their York Cards.
