Hannah Phillip

Hannah Phillip, joins the Fairfax House team as Assistant Director and has moved from South Australia to take up this prestigious post.

Hannah was born in Yorkshire but has lived for over 25 years in the wine growing region of the Barossa Valley in Australia. She is delighted to be returning to her roots.

Whilst in Australia, she managed historic flagship mansion, Ayers House. Named after its first owner Sir Henry Ayers and today managed by the National Trust of South Australia it is one of the last remaining grand 19th century houses of North Terrace in Adelaide. During her time there she successfully achieved a range of milestone-making goals for the museum which has earned it recognition and respect as a major cultural tourism site.

Having brought the Ayres House museum to a point where it is a main player in both the museum and cultural tourism sectors, Hannah was keen to step into a more challenging role. She had visited Fairfax House on several occasions and was extremely impressed with its collection. She comments: “I feel truly privileged to be joining the team at Fairfax House and to be involved in a heritage site which possesses such important collections and sets such a high benchmark in conservation and events.

“I am especially delighted to be coming to the House at such a special time in their history and to be able to share in the anniversary celebrations marking 25 since Fairfax House was open as a House Museum to the public.

“It is a very exciting prospect, the chance to actually live and work in a city with a rich history dating back to Viking and Roman times. Even more so though, I am relishing the opportunity to take the step back in time by one hundred years from the Victorian era to the mid eighteenth century. Completed in 1762 for Viscount Fairfax of Gilling Castle, Fairfax House offers such a striking contrast in architectural, furnishing and even social terms to the sprawling 19th century Australian colonial mansion of nouveau riche businessman, Sir Henry Ayers.”

An honours history graduate of the University of Adelaide, Hannah brings with her high-level experience in the field of historic place management and multi-faceted skills in business, project and events management, marketing, conservation and team leadership.

Peter Brown, Director at Fairfax House, is delighted to welcome Hannah into the fold: “Hannah’s experience in managing Ayers House in Australia will be invaluable to us, we look forward to her enthusiasm and new ideas.”
