Fairfax House is hosting a touring exhibition of paintings, watercolours and drawings, curated by the Sir John Soane’s Museum in London.

Yorkshire is fortunate in having a number of distinguished buildings designed by gentlemen architects like Lord Burlington, William Worsley and Sir Thomas Robinson. The exhibition, curated by the Sir John Soane’s Museum, features a number of these exquisite designs and includes others like the eccentric design for a romantic retreat by Ada Byron, only daughter of the famous poet.

An early definition of an amateur was 'a person understanding and loving and practising the polite arts of painting, sculpture and architecture without any regard to financial advantage'.

What will surprise the visitor is the innovation of many of the buildings. It was as if the amateur cold practise architectural design unfettered by convention. The results are some of the most extraordinary and delightful creations.
