Set in Northern England, miner Frank Machin (Richard Harris), lodges with widow Mrs Hammond. His is mean, touch and ambitious and joins the local rugby team. As his career progresses, so too his brutal nature distances him for those around him. Success and a new sense of insecurity makes him harsher and cruder.
