York Civic Trust

York Civic Trust, which owns and restored Fairfax House, was established in 1946 to preserve the City's architectural heritage and to encourage its cultural, artistic and educational activities.
The statue of Constantine was a gift to the city from York Civic Trust in 1998.
Etty statue - York Civic Trust was responsible for having it cleaned.
St Anthonys Hall is the old Borthwick Institute (which has now moved to the University of York). The hall was offered to York Civic Trust following the closure of the Blue Coat School in 1947.
- York is quite clearly special; all who live in, or visit the City, know this instinctively and the York Civic Trust's mission is to keep it so.
- By joining York Civic Trust you benefit from a strong voice which promotes the conservation of the City's unique historic fabric.
- We give expert planning guidance to local government and campaign on major city-wide issues.
- Our independent advice to both local and national policy-makers is unfettered by political, private, or commercial constraints.
- We make grants for the City's enhancement.
- We take a lead on major initiatives; the foundation of the University of York, for example, and the closure of Deangate to traffic, came about as a result of our efforts.
- Our members benefit from an exciting programme of visits and lectures.
- We publish outstanding Annual Reports and other publications that serve as a permanent record of York's development and the Trust's achievements.
- We operate a nationally recognised house museum, Fairfax House and mount important exhibitions to which members have free entry.
- Our restorations of historic buildings such as Fairfax House, Peasholme House and the Mansion House, stand as exemplars of best practice.
- The Young York Civic Trust (the first in the country) encourages young people from all the secondary schools in York to care for their environment, through a series of visits and events.
- Please join York Civic Trust and give us your support.
