All Saints Church is justly famous, its elegant spire and remarkable stained glass well known. There is, however, much more to appreciate with a wealth of monuments across eight centuries. St John the Evangelist, its East wall fronting North Street, is now a pub called ‘The Parish’. York Civic Trust saved the church from demolition in the early 1950s and restored it for use as The Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies. The building dates from the C12th, with work from all periods of Gothic and an attractive short brick and timber tower of 1646. Drinks will be served here at the conclusion of the tour, and if you’re in no hurry, do join those members who are staying for supper.
