Fairfax of Virginia, America’s only peerage – talk by the Honourable Hugh Fairfax

This is something of a forgotten story, as uniquely the Fairfax family are the only members of the British House of Lords – the peerage – to have been long-time residents of the United States. For over 150 years, first as colonists and then loyal citizens of the republic, they have played an active part in many great American events. Then, curiously, just as the United States was assuming its position as world powerhouse, they returned to Britain.

The Honourable Hugh Fairfax, a younger brother of our patron the 14th Lord Fairfax and a society member, is a direct descendant of the chief protagonists in this story. He has visited America on a number of occasions and met many of those who continue on the narrative to the present day. His book on the subject will be published shortly and will no doubt be available on the day.

This intriguing story will help Fairfax House hosts engage with US visitors.

The venue is the St Michael le Belfrey Hall at 52A Stonegate, York, and the talk will be followed by our ever-popular afternoon tea.
