Due to unforeseen circumstances we regretfully announce that we are unable to open Fairfax House as part of the 2020 York Residents Festival. This is due to emergency conservation work required on all of our important historic plasterwork and stucco ceilings.

During our usual January closed period, specialist testing – carried out by York Conservation Trust – was undertaken on all of the ceilings at Fairfax House. The results of this showed that the ceilings required emergency work to prevent them from deteriorating further but also from becoming a public danger. Our number one priority is public safety and so we simply cannot allow access to the building during this time.

We have very much enjoyed being part of York Residents Festival over the years and being able to share our magnificent townhouse and collections with visitors and the local community. Therefore we will run an open weekend for York Residents later on in the year – date to be confirmed.

Fairfax House will be officially re-opening to the public on Friday 27th March 2020.
