Get that festive feeling at Fairfax House with our brand new  winter exhibition, A Season for Giving.

December 2020

Join us on a festive journey through this magnificent townhouse and its collections where, room by room, atmospheric and magical scenes display the generous gifts bequeathed to York Civic Trust for the benefit of the people of York.

Meet Noel Terry for a 1940s family Christmas and discover the story behind the many splendid gifts he left to the city of York. Then journey back in time and join a raucous Georgian Christmas dinner party where our stunning collection of silverware purchased with bequests from Arthur Smallwood and Leslie Boothman will sparkle in the candlelight. A resplendent innovative display of gifted antique porcelain will decorate the Kitchen, whilst upstairs you will find a showcase of beautiful eighteenth-century costume and our world-class collection of historic clocks, all set to chime in unison, ending in the sumptuous surroundings of the Saloon. Here our Christmas installation culminates with an outstanding display of over 400 pieces of Georgian glassware gifted, by John Butler, illuminated and shimmering.
