Visit & Afternoon Tea
Built just before World War 1, this fine neo-Georgian house is the creation of Walter Brierley, the York architect familiar to most of us. It stands on the site of an earlier mansion owned by the Lascelles family. The main importance of the house today is the astonishing collection of period furniture and antiques amassed by Herbert William Mawer who bought the house in 1962.
His successor, Michael Mallaby, is Trustee of the charity set up to preserve the hall and its contents. We are privileged to have a private tour of the house and as we progress through each room, filled to capacity with a multitude of diverse furniture and treasures, we will see that this objective is being energetically and faithfully achieved. This applies not only to the house, but also to the splendid gardens. These cover an area of 5 acres and after some years of neglect have now been fully restored to their former glory.
Our visit will end with afternoon tea at the invitation of the owner.
