Donate to Conserve our Collection

Our fundraising focus this summer is our collection of eighteenth century porcelain. We are hoping to raise a total of £9000 to conserve seventeen ceramics, most of which have been off display for many years.

Most of the decorative porcelain you see throughout the house today came to Fairfax House through Kathleen Terry as part of the ‘Noel Terry Bequest’ in 1980. Kathleen was the daughter of Henry Ernest Leetham, an important York industrialist who amassed an impressive collection of porcelain and jade. Following Leetham’s death in 1923 his collection was dispersed amongst his children with many pieces ending up in the Terry family collection.

Over the years both the story of Kathleen’s contribution and the Leetham family porcelain has taken a back seat to Noel and his collection of furniture and clocks. Even in terms of the conservation, broken pieces of porcelain have remained off display in deep storage as they were deemed to be of less significance.

We would like to correct this and conserve the porcelain so that it can be displayed throughout Fairfax House. We are extremely grateful for any contributions, no matter how large or small. Thank you for your support.

Fairfax House is an independent museum managed by York Civic Trust, a not-for-profit membership organisation dedicated to protecting and enhancing York’s cultural heritage. As such the museum does not receive any public funding and so relies heavily upon visitor income generated through admissions, events, the museum shop and donations
