Born in the Yorkshire town of Otley, Thomas Chippendale (1718-1779), rose from humble origins to become perhaps one of Britain’s finest and most influential furniture-makers. His revolutionary book of designs, ‘The Director’, first published in 1754, made him famous throughout Europe and North America, with his name being used as a byword for exquisite quality and luxury. During 2018 Fairfax House will be joining with museums and galleries from across the country to mark 300 years since Chippendale’s birth by celebrating his remarkable genius and legacy.

Fairfax House has an exquisite collection of early English furniture, including pieces by or inspired by Thomas Chippendale, and throughout 2018 we will be shining a spotlight on the work of this master craftsman with an inspiring programme of events and talks. Works from Fairfax House will also be on display at Leeds City Museum in their exhibition Chippendale 300 – The Exhibition (9th Feb 2018- 10 June 2018).
