Congratulations to Roger Ward for being an Inspirational Teacher Finalist in the 2018 York Culture Awards.

Teaching ‘beyond the classroom’ has been a thread running throughout Roger Ward’s career. His passion to share knowledge, ability to communicate across all ages and backgrounds, and gift for sparking an interest in people, combine to make him an inspirational teacher in the world of cultural heritage. Across the past decade, Roger, as Senior Guide at Fairfax House, has been dedicated to educating and communicating what makes this the finest Georgian townhouse in England. Through the museum’s volunteer training programme, which he helped create and leads, he kindles this self-same passion in new generations of room stewards, interpreters and guides.

In 2010 Roger helped pioneer a new training programme for volunteers. His vision has seen volunteering and visitor engagement transformed, and taken Fairfax House to the position of having a growing team of talented volunteers who are passionate about sharing this townhouse’s stories with the 24,000+ visitors they welcome every year. Roger also works closely with schools, including Takeover Day, giving young people the opportunity to have their ideas and voices heard.

Fairfax House is delighted to be a part of this year’s York Culture Awards and to see Roger’s education work recognised through being shortlisted as a Finalist in the Inspirational Teacher category (sponsored by Yorkshire Education). York Culture Awards celebrate excellence in the arts and culture sector and rewards outstanding innovation, creativity and quality. Over 110 entries and nominations were received for the Awards this year, and it is a testament to Roger’s inspirational teaching qualities that he is as a Finalist in this category.

We wish him all the best at the Awards ceremony on Monday 19th November.
